Tantu is organizing a seminar on 'Sustainability and Recycling in the Textile and Apparel Industry' on 9th February. 2025.
The textile and apparel industry is one of the largest and most dynamic sectors in the global economy. It serves as a cornerstone for creativity and cultural expression, while also being a significant contributor to employment and economic growth. However, this industry has long been recognized as a major consumer of resources and a source of environmental challenges. From water-intensive cotton farming to the widespread use of synthetic fibers derived from fossil fuels, the sector’s practices have raised concerns about sustainability and ecological balance.
In recent years, the urgency to address these issues has grown, driven by increasing awareness of climate change, resource depletion, and waste management challenges. According to the World Bank, the fashion industry accounts for 10% of annual global carbon emissions and consumes approximately 79 billion cubic meters of water per year. Furthermore, the disposal of clothing and textiles generates an estimated 92 million tons of waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills or incinerators.
As we gather for this seminar, we aim to explore the vital topics of sustainability and recycling within the textile and apparel industry. Our discussions will focus on innovative strategies, cutting-edge technologies, and collaborative efforts that can pave the way for a more sustainable future. Key themes will include:
Circular Economy Models: Examining how the industry can transition from a linear "take-make-dispose" model to a circular one that prioritizes reuse, recycling, and regeneration.
Sustainable Materials and Practices: Highlighting advances in eco-friendly fibers, dyes, and production techniques that minimize environmental impact.
Waste Reduction and Recycling Innovations: Discussing solutions to manage post-consumer textile waste and extend the life cycle of garments through upcycling and advanced recycling technologies.
Corporate Responsibility and Consumer Engagement: Addressing the role of brands, policymakers, and consumers in driving sustainability initiatives and fostering a culture of conscious consumption.
This seminar is a call to action for all stakeholders—from manufacturers and designers to policymakers and consumers—to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible textile and apparel industry. Together, we can envision and create a future where fashion thrives in harmony with the plan
